Other University Symbols

Various official symbols exist at Penn State in addition to the University mark. These symbols have specific uses and functions and are not interchangeable with the University mark.

Other University Symbols //

University Seal

The University seal has been in existence in one form or another since the founding of the University. The current version was introduced in 1953 and features the crest of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania surrounded by the formal name of the University. Since implementation of the University mark in 1987, the seal has shifted in function exclusively to an official stamp of validation–like a notary’s stamp–for legal documents such as contracts and diplomas or for formal references such as the official address of the University. Designs of the University seal are available in Nittany Navy (Pantone 282), Beaver Blue (Pantone 287), and black and white, and can be used interchangeably or simply how they can best be rendered in a given application. Please note that the University seal should never be deconstructed, used in part, or altered in any way.

NOTE: The University seal is a registered symbol of the Pennsylvania State University and its uses are strictly controlled by the University. Please email licensing@psu.edu with questions related to the University seal or visit the licensing website.

The Nittany Lion

Nittany Lion Mascot Caricatures

Nittany Lion Mascot (“Mascot”) caricatures are available for use by Penn State faculty, staff, and students to represent Penn State pride and spirit. The Nittany Lion Mascot artwork conveys the same traits that our live mascot is famous for such as friendliness, energy, and stellar sportsmanship. Likewise, the Nittany Lion Mascot caricatures must represent Penn State in a positive manner in all use instances. The Mascot caricatures may only be used as decorative artwork in connection with University communications. Penn State faculty and staff may use the artwork in accordance with the University’s Code of Responsible Conduct. Recognized Student Organizations may also use the artwork for their organization’s communications in accordance with the University’s Student Code of Conduct

Any use of the Nittany Lion Caricature artwork must adhere to the following standards:

Personal or Non-University use is not permitted. Do not share artwork with non-University parties unless authorized by the Office of Strategic Communications in writing.

A Mascot caricature may not be used as a logo for a specific area, initiative or recognized student organization.

Mascot caricatures should not be graphically altered. Text or graphics may be placed near the Lion but not touch it. Do not change the Mascot’s color or general appearance as shown. The following exceptions are permitted:

  • For the Nittany Lion Sign pose, sign content may include event information, announcements or positive cheer messages such as “We Are Penn State.” Student content must not violate the University’s Student Code of Conduct.
  • Specific per-caricature cropping guidelines are available in the downloadable pdf.

Questions about the use of the Nittany Lion Caricatures may be directed to the Office of Strategic Communications at licensing@psu.edu. Nittany Lion Caricature files are available for download.

Nittany Lion Shrine Illustrations

Vector line art of the Nittany Lion Shrine is offered as “classic” Nittany Lion designs in full body and torso versions. Options include simple and detailed versions of the full body lion as well as left and right facing poses. These illustrations are available for download.

NOTE: Classic Nittany Lion artwork is trademarked by The Pennsylvania State University and its uses are strictly controlled by the University. Information about classic Nittany Lion artwork also is available on the licensing website. Questions regarding the use of this artwork may be directed to the Office of Strategic Communications at pennstatebrand@psu.edu.

Faceted Lion Shrine

The stylized, abstract interpretation of the Nittany Lion Shrine is reminiscent of multi-faceted gemstones and is inspired by the diversity of our University. The three design iterations (head, full body, and torso) in four different styles are available for download. These designs may be paired with other brand design elements, however one should always be mindful of how our brand elements interact; it’s important to achieve clarity and maintain the integrity (original design intent) of all brand elements. For example, because of the intricate nature of the Faceted Lion design, ensure that graphics and backgrounds do not visually compete in your overall design layout.

Only the simple Faceted Lion Shrine (without the ’S’ curve texture included) may be used with a physical production process (vs. digital printing).

Do not use the Faceted Lion Shrine for embroidery applications.

Do not use the Faceted Lion Shrine in a physical production process with application at smaller than 3” in diameter (the minimum size for the torso and head designs should be sized based on this 3” minimum diameter of the full body design).

Do not change the color or general appearance as provided.

Nittany Lion Paw Print

The Nittany Lion paw print graphic is available for use by Penn State faculty, staff, and students to represent pride and spirit. The paw print files are available for download. The paw print is trademarked by the University and must not be graphically altered. Other requirements are:

  • Text or graphics may be placed near the paw print but should not touch it.
  • Use a paw print as accent artwork for Penn State materials but not as a logo for a specific area or initiative.
  • Text or graphics should not be placed within the paw print or in the space between the toes and palm.
  • Nittany Navy (Pantone 282) is the only permissible color for the Nittany Lion Paw Print. The Paw should always have the white outline included.
  • Merchandise featuring the paw print must be produced by licensed vendors (please see licensing.psu.edu for more information) and requires a registration symbol in the location shown below.

The Primary Athletics Mark

Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics uses the Primary Athletics mark. This mark may be used to represent Penn State Intercollegiate athletic activities. It should not be used to represent the University’s academic areas or non-athletic communications and may not be used as a replacement for the primary University mark. Use of the Athletic mark by anyone other than Penn State Athletics staff requires approval by the Office of Licensing Programs. Please email licensing@psu.edu with questions.

University Marks and Symbols on Merchandise

Penn State names, marks, and symbols are featured on thousands of merchandise items in the marketplace. Any merchandise featuring a registered or trademarked Penn State name, mark, or symbol, regardless of who produces it or for what purpose, must follow appropriate visual standards and licensing agreements. Additionally, any University names, marks, or symbols appearing on merchandise should include either the registration symbol [®] or trademark symbol [™] depending on which is appropriate.

Any University unit that would like to produce an item of merchandise should start by visiting the Licensing Programs website or calling 814-865-0356 to locate a licensed vendor or ask questions. University faculty and staff may use Penn State names, marks, and symbols, according to established visual and editorial guidelines, on any materials to be used for recruitment, development, or general promotion of the institution. However, when merchandise or specialty products (for example: shirts, hats, mugs, pens, etc…) are produced, those items are subject to a promotional agreement from the Office of Licensing Programs. This is the case whether the item is to be given away for free or sold for profit. In all cases, merchandise and specialty items must be produced by licensed Penn State vendors.

Lapel Pins

Lapel pins are a popular merchandise item used to show Penn State spirit on clothing. The Nittany Lion shield represents the Penn State community and is the preferred lapel pin artwork. However, when Penn State unit identification is necessary, an alternate lapel pin template is available. This template maintains the graphic integrity of our shield, while allowing space to add a unit title.

  • Unit titles (college, campus, or administrative areas) or Penn State-related initiatives may be placed in the lower half of the outer rim.
  • The recommended lapel pin size is 1-inch in diameter.
  • DO NOT alter the design or reduce the type size.
  • The lapel pin design should never be used for a digital communication or in a digital medium (for example, it should never be used on a website or in email; it should never replace a University mark).

NOTE: A lapel pin template is available for internal (non-commercial) use from the Office of Strategic Communications at pennstatebrand@psu.edu

Anniversary Tags

An approved anniversary tag may be used as a graphic accent on most University marketing communications to celebrate an entity’s anniversary milestone. Please note the following guidelines for creating and using anniversary tags:

  • An anniversary tag may be used for a college, campus, school, center, institute, museum, or university business.
  • An anniversary tag can either be designed such that the celebrating entity is identified within the design, or the focus can be on the anniversary year, for example.
  • An anniversary tag should always be designed so that it is visually complimentary to the Penn State University mark.
  • A reference and association with Penn State should always be clear. As a general practice, a full University mark should be included somewhere within a communication or creative canvas, along with the anniversary tag.
  • The design must feature one or more colors from the primary brand color palette, as provided in the Penn State brand book.
    • Accent colors can be used appropriately as indicated in the brand book color guidelines
  • DO NOT attempt to replicate the University seal.
  • The design should feature a primary brand font for further brand recognition.
    • Please note: there may be exceptions allowed if the custom design hinges on a creative font design, to use a brand accent font or other creative fonts.
  • Duration for use is limited. Remove the tag from circulation at the end of the anniversary year.
  • DO NOT use an anniversary tag to create new stationery.
  • DO NOT use a shield shape or Nittany Lion artwork in the design.

NOTE: Anniversary tag artwork requires advance approval by the Office of Strategic Communications. Send questions or artwork to pennstatebrand@psu.edu.

University-Recognized Student Organization Mark

Penn State Recognized Student Organizations may use a special version of the University's mark on their materials and communications. The University-Recognized Student Organization Shield Mark is made available through Office of Student Affairs, and graphic files may be requested at Student Activities Offices at campus locations. University Park organizations should email studentorg@psu.edu to request the graphic files.

The mark design is unique to Recognized Student Organizations and features the only University trademarked symbol that may be used to graphically identify a Recognized Student Organization. When using this mark, it may not be altered in any way. Organizations must adhere to the University’s color and correct mark use standards.

In addition to communications, any merchandise that features a University-Recognized Student Organization Mark must be produced by a University licensed vendor. A vendor list is available on the Licensing website.

Mark Usage Examples

In order to maintain a strong visual identity system, it’s important to understand both proper and improper mark usage. The following examples provide explanations on how to use our mark effectively as well as what to avoid.

Mark Usage Examples //

On Photos and Images

The positive and reverse versions of the University mark enable the marks to be placed on light and dark backgrounds. When using our mark on images, be mindful that the logotype has sufficient contrast over the background, has sufficient clear space, and is not placed on top of strong or distracting shapes or patterns.

Websites

All Penn State websites should have a look and feel that is appropriately familiar to the Penn State brand. One important way to achieve this association is to place the appropriate University mark at the top of every webpage (top left in the brand bar component, for example). When visitors land on an entity’s website—no matter the origin of their journey—they should know unquestionably that they’ve landed on a Penn State website. This user experience is primarily achieved with the proper positioning of the University mark and secondly, with the implementation of our brand blue and white color palette. Please reference our online and in-depth color guidance. Please note that a website URL that includes “psu” does not provide a clear enough association to Penn State on its own.

Web Accessibility

All Penn State websites must be designed and maintained with accessibility in mind to ensure an inclusive, usable experience for all audiences. Refer to the Penn State Web Accessibility resources for practical guidance and tools. Policy AD54 establishes the standards that support consistency, usability, and compliance across the University’s web presence.

Social Media Avatars

The Penn State social media avatar guidelines are intended for all official Penn State social media accounts. These guidelines aim to achieve brand recognition, design consistency, and credibility with all Penn State social media avatars.  Achieving all three goals protects and elevates the University’s image and reputation, while also providing needed design variety.

The Nittany Lion shield is used consistently to ground all social media avatar designs in the Penn State brand architecture. There are two avatar categories provided:

Category 1 avatars are reserved for Penn State social media accounts managed by the Office of Strategic Communications within the office of the President and for all the main social media accounts for all the Penn State Commonwealth Campuses. The avatars are provided in text and non-text versions.

Category 2 avatars are intended for all other colleges, schools, departments, units, institutes, centers, and administrative offices at Penn State. Although there are different limitations regarding name length across social media sites, the templates provided enable up to two lines of customizable text, as well as non-text options. If a name does not fit in the font point size and spacing provided in each text template, please use a non-text version. The specific text parameters are designed intentionally, please do not alter them.

The avatars provided are optimized for resolution and clarity. Resizing and cropping should be avoided, as this will alter the resolution and image quality of the avatar.

NOTE: Because of the uniquely small size of the avatar canvas, we are allowing an exception to the general visual identity guidelines that restrict locking-up text with the shield.

Mobile App

The Penn State Mobile App visual identity guidelines are intended for Penn State mobile apps relating to academic, research, and administrative functions including Outreach*. These guidelines aim for brand recognition, design consistency, and credibility. Achieving all three goals protects and elevates the University’s image and reputation, including each program, initiative, or unit creating an app.

*These guidelines do not directly apply to apps that are developed as part of a partnership, collaboration, or co-branded initiative. For clarification or support, please contact pennstatebrand@psu.edu.

Mobile App Overview

The Penn State name and/or visual identity should be properly represented in one or more of the following ways (as indicated): App Name (preferred), App Icon (mandatory), App Subtitle, Description, Promotional Text, and/or Keywords (preferred), App Screenshots or Previews (preferred), App Splash Screen (preferred), App Home Screen (mandatory).

App Icon Option 1 App icon option 1: Penn State vertical mark (vertical 1 and vertical 2)

App Icon Option 1: A complete Penn State vertical 1 or vertical 2 mark helps to convey a credible, university-produced app.

App Icon Option 2 App icon option 2: Penn State icon template with customizable lower area

App Icon Option 2: The Penn State icon template design uses the text “Penn State” in white on Nittany Navy and as Nittany Navy on white. Underneath this heading (that displays “Penn State”), designers can have full flexibility to incorporate custom text, colors, and other designs.

App Icon Option 3 App icon option 3: Nittany Lion shield alone

App Icon Option 3: The Nittany Lion shield alone. Because this option is not a mark that includes “Penn State,” consider using the Nittany Lion shield logo only if your app name includes “Penn State.”

App Icon Option 4 App icon option 4: Nittany Lion shield with unit name

App Icon Option 4: Using Proxima Nova, add your campus, college, or other unit name just below the Nittany Lion shield logo. Please follow the spacing used in the Penn State vertical 1 mark.

App Subtitle, Description, Keywords, etc App store fields showing recommended use of “Penn State” for brand recognition

For brand recognition, using “Penn State” in one or more of the content fields is recommended.

App Splash Screen App splash screen example with University mark over approved brand background

This introductory screen appears briefly while an app is loading. To maximize the full device canvas, consider using the University Mark or Tier 2 entity mark over an approved brand color or gradient. Several splash screen backgrounds are provided as options for your splash screen designs.

App Home Screen App home screen example with Tier 2 entity mark

It is mandatory to use the Tier 2 entity mark identifying the associated Penn State campus, college, or administrative unit.

Mark Misuse

The University mark and associated visual identity system is the single most important visual element of our brand. Diligent application of the visual identity standards and requirements, cements our brand at every level of our University—maintaining and advancing our brand recognition on a national and global stage.

Never redraw or recreate our mark, including our Nittany Lion shield or “Penn State” logotype. Any modification of our mark diminishes its impact and weakens our legal protection. Only authorized artwork may be used.

Incorrect use example: not using a reverse version over a dark background

DO NOT use the Beaver Blue logotype version of the University mark on a medium-to-dark background such that there is not sufficient color contrast between the logotype and the background. The reverse (REV) version of the University mark should be used in this instance.

Incorrect use example: content placed closer than minimum clear space allows

DO NOT add text directly below any institutional mark in a manner that does not respect the required clear space around the mark.

Incorrect use example: not using a three-color mark on digital deliverables

DO NOT use a black and white mark on any digital deliverable or medium. A black and white mark can only be used in print and only when color printing is not possible.

NOTE: the use of a black and white mark or one or two-color marks should never be used as a design preference; these marks are intended for specific, limited, technical applications.

Incorrect use example: insufficient clear space

DO NOT place a University mark close to text in a manner that does not respect the required clear space around the mark.

Incorrect use example: incomplete graphic elements

DO NOT remove the left bridge area of the nose on the Nittany Lion.

Incorrect use example: poorly cropped avatar

DO NOT crop the Nittany Lion shield avatar in a manner that clips any part of the shield.

Brand Architecture

Brand architecture is a powerful tool that allows us to connect the many entities within our University in a clear, logical manner. We achieve this by creating a system for entities that use our mark, as shown here. These entity marks include our campuses, colleges, administrative/academic units, institutes, departments, and areas of expertise.

Brand Architecture //

Tier 1

This is our primary University mark. This tier 1 mark is the overarching entity to which all other entities are connected.

Tier 1: primary Penn State University mark
Brand Architecture //

Tier 2

Tier 2 marks include entities such as all campuses, all colleges, and approved administrative/academic units

Tier 2: campus, college, and approved unit marks
Brand Architecture //

Tiers 3 and 4

Tier 3 and 4 marks include entities within our campuses, colleges, and approved administrative/academic units such as schools, departments, institutes, centers, programs, and laboratories

NOTE: The official Penn State Brand Architecture guidelines are available for download and provide detailed information about all three Tier 3 and 4 layout options. Please contact the Visual Identity Office with the Office of Strategic Communications with any questions concerning institutional marks or other designs by emailing pennstatebrand@psu.edu. To request a new Tier 3 or 4 mark, please use this form.

Brand Architecture //

Stacked, Vertical, and Horizontal Alignment

Our university marks are now offered in three layout options: stacked, vertical, and horizontal. These layouts incorporate horizontal or vertical lines and each have new, specific point size options for the Tier 3 and 4 text. All of these updates are intended to enable flexibility for the many diverse entities across our University and are intended to result in more compact and appealing Tier 3 and 4 marks. It is acceptable for a Tier 3 or 4 mark to be created or connected to a Tier 1 or 2 mark, depending on the appropriateness of the association to the parent entity or the University as a whole.

Color and the Mark

Color is an important component of Penn State’s visual heritage. Our University mark and shield feature three of the four colors of our Penn State brand palette and are central to the Penn State brand.

Color and the Mark //

Three-Color (3C) Mark

The preferred version of the University mark is the three-color version featuring White Out and two brand blue colors: Beaver Blue (Pantone 287) with Pugh Blue (Pantone 284) accents. This three-color mark is required whenever it is technically possible.

Examples //

Multiple Beaver Blue–colored buttons featuring three-color Penn State marks

NOTE: Choose your promotional product based on the understanding that the three color mark should be used whenever technically possible. The use of a black and white mark or one or two-color marks should never be used as a design preference; these marks are intended for specific, limited, technical applications.

Color and the Mark //

Three-Color (3C) Reverse Mark

The reverse marks are not simply the positive marks with white logotype. The scale, position, and line weights have been optically adjusted. Use the reverse marks on dark backgrounds in order to achieve sufficient, accessible color contrast.

Examples //
Three-color reverse mark printed on media pass tag
Student speaking at a podium with a three‑color reverse mark printed on front
Color and the Mark //

One-Color (1C) Mark

For communications needs, the three-color University mark featuring White Out, Beaver Blue (Pantone 287), and Pugh Blue (Pantone 284) is always preferred. However, there may be production processes or use cases that cannot facilitate a multiple color application. In these scenarios, a one-color mark should be used and must appear in White Out or Beaver Blue (Pantone 287) only. This version of the University mark is the only mark in which the Nittany Lion or the background area within the Nittany Lion shield is transparent, which means that the  color or material on which the one-color mark is applied will fill within the Nittany Lion shield.

DO NOT attempt to create a one-color mark by simply assigning white or Beaver Blue to a two-color black mark. One-color marks are not downloadable from this site, however, the University’s licensed vendors will have access to these marks as they are used primarily for merchandise.

Examples //

One‑color white mark on black water bottle
One‑color white mark on blue greeting card

Incorrect Use

Please see one-color mark misuse examples below. These examples are incorrect because the contrast is too low, the incorrect one-color mark is used, and the background color of the last t-shirt is too busy with non-approved colors.

Examples //
Incorrect use example: one-color white mark on light color background
Incorrect use example: one-color Beaver Blue mark changed to white
Incorrect use example: one‑color white mark placed on a busy patterned T‑shirt
Color and the Mark //

Special Use Applications

When choosing a mark, the three-color University mark featuring White Out, Beaver Blue (Pantone 287), and Pugh Blue (Pantone 284) is always preferred. However, certain production processes are technically limited to one color and require a special mark (ex. engraving, embossing, debossing, etching, and foil stamping). These special use marks are the only marks in which the Nittany Lion or the background area within the Nittany Lion shield is transparent. This means that the background color or material on which the special use mark is applied will fill this transparent portion within the shield. Because of this, the appropriate special use mark may only be used on white, medium-to-navy blue, or black—or in the case of embossing or etching for example, the product or material color could be a neutral color. To reiterate, the transparent portion within the Nittany Lion shield should never appear to be filled with any color other than white, medium-to-navy blue, black, or an approved neutral color.

NOTE: DO NOT attempt to create a one-color mark. Special use marks are not downloadable from this site since the University’s licensed vendors have access to these marks as they are primarily used for merchandise.

Color and the Mark //

Use on Background Colors and Designs

The sole purpose of the two types of mark designs (one featuring the Beaver Blue logotype and one featuring the White Out logotype) is to achieve proper contrast and readability over all types of backgrounds.

NOTE: Never attempt to edit or alter University marks. Although the positive and reverse marks appear very similar aside from the color of the logotype, there are subtle design differences between each.

Color Specifications

The four colors of our Penn State Brand Palette are central to the Penn State brand. The brand color palette consists of the primary brand colors (Nittany Navy [Pantone 282], Beaver Blue [Pantone 287], and White Out) and the secondary brand color (Pugh Blue [Pantone 284]). The University mark features Beaver Blue (Pantone 287) and White Out and the secondary brand color Pugh Blue (Pantone 284). The Athletics mark features Nittany Navy (Pantone 282) and White Out.

No matter the audience, whether your design is subtle or bold, formal or casual — consistently using the primary brand blues (Nittany Navy and Beaver Blue) strongly links your design to the Penn State brand.

HEX codes are hexadecimal values used for specifying RGB colors for the web. They are written as six-digit combinations of letters and numbers preceded by a pound sign (#). For example, the hex code for Nittany Navy is #001E44.

PMS

The Pantone Matching System® (PMS) is comprised of thousands of numbered swatches. PMS colors are also called “spot” colors. This system creates the most accurate color match and the sharpest details.

Mark Sizing and Placement

To effectively identify our communications, our marks need to have visual presence. Being mindful of minimum clear space, sizing, and alignment is vital to ensuring our University mark maintains its integrity across various applications.

Mark Sizing and Placement //

Clear Space

One way to ensure the visual presence of our marks is to maintain a protected area, or clear space, around them where no other elements may be placed. Headlines, text, graphic elements, imagery, and the edge of a page are not permitted within the indicated clear space. Measure the Nittany Lion shield’s width at the actual size you plan to display it, then use either the preferred or minimum clear space, as explained below.

Preferred Clear Space

Use preferred clear space around a mark whenever possible. Measure half of the Nittany Lion shield’s width at the actual size you plan to display it. Use this measurement on all sides of your mark to create a preferred clear space perimeter.

Diagram illustrating preferred clear space around the Nittany Lion Shield and Penn State mark

Minimum Clear Space

Measure one-quarter of the Nittany Lion shield’s width at the actual size you plan to display it. Use this measurement on all sides of your mark to create a minimum clear space perimeter.

NOTE: Use of the minimum clear space should never be ignored in favor of design preference.

Minimum Size

Along with respecting the clear space, placing a University mark at an appropriate scale is equally important to proper mark implementation. Sound design judgment is required to consider how a design or product will be viewed, the intended message, and the appropriate visual hierarchy. In some cases, such as signage, there may be a need to make the mark as large as possible. In other cases, such as stationery, on print materials, or on a website, the mark should be small in size so as to not overpower the primary message content.

The primary University mark must never be applied such that the width of the Nittany Lion shield is smaller than .3 inches.

NOTE: The principles demonstrated here apply to all Tier 1, 2, 3, and 4 marks.

Vertical Mark Minimum Size

Because of the difference in size relationship between the Nittany Lion shield and the logotype in the two vertical marks, each has a different minimum size recommendation.

The vertical 1 mark should not be applied so that the width of the Nittany Lion shield is smaller than .3 inches. The vertical 2 mark should not be applied so that the width of the Nittany Lion shield is smaller than .5 inches.

Alignment

A purposeful layout alignment between the University mark and other text, graphics, or images provides a sense of order and structure to a design. Placement that seems arbitrary or indecisive should always be avoided. Avoid situations where alignment is close, but not quite aligned, as this can appear to be a mistake. There are several alignment options for a University mark, including: alignment with the left edge of the Nittany Lion shield, alignment with the left edge of the logotype, alignment with the baseline of the logotype, and center alignment.

NOTE: The principles demonstrated here apply to all Tier 1, 2, 3, and 4 marks.

University Mark and Shield

Having a clear and consistent visual identity helps build greater recognition and awareness of our University and its many colleges, campuses, and administrative/academic units. The most important element of our visual identity is our University mark, which is made up of our Nittany Lion shield and logotype.

University Mark and Shield //

University Mark

Our University mark is composed of the Nittany Lion shield and the “Penn State” logotype and is Penn State's institutional mark representing the University in its entirety. The mark is used to brand all of our communications across all platforms, channels, and mediums.

The three-color mark shown here is the primary horizontal mark and is the required color version to be used whenever technically possible.

NOTE: Never redraw or try to recreate our shield. Any modification of our shield diminishes its impact and weakens our legal protection. Only authorized artwork may be used.

The University mark does not replace the University seal or the primary Athletics mark; these special use marks will each continue to be used as described in the section entitled Other University Symbols.

The Nittany Lion Shrine

Since 1907, the Nittany Lion has served as a central symbol for Penn State. The Nittany Lion shrine — sculpted by Heinz Warneke in 1942 as a gift from the class of 1940 — is easily the University’s most universally-known and recognizable image. While the original shrine sculpture is located at the University Park campus, three-quarter scale replicas are similarly displayed at all Penn State commonwealth campuses, making the Nittany Lion shrine a powerful and relatable brand symbol for our community.

The Nittany Lion shield design combines the iconic features of the Nittany Lion Shrine with the brand colors Beaver Blue (Pantone 287), Pugh Blue (Pantone 284), and White Out, creating a contemporary and forward-facing visual representation of our heritage.

Nittany Lion Shield Used Alone

As a general rule, the Nittany Lion shield should not be used alone (without the Penn State logotype). However, a few exceptions may be allowed.

Some on-campus signage has strictly limited space and with the association to Penn State abundantly clear, this application may warrant the use of the Nittany Lion shield by itself. Additionally, a coin or lapel pin is a unique promotional product with strictly limited space and may be an acceptable use of the Nittany Lion shield alone.

The Nittany Lion shield may also be used alone as a design element. Use as a design element can include use of the full shield (as it appears in the University mark) or use of the shield shape or outline only. Because of its importance within our visual identity system, the shield must always be used with intention and care.

When using the full shield:

  • A full University mark must appear within the same field of view.
  • The shield should be cropped so that no more than two of its three sides are fully visible.
  • The Nittany Lion must remain clearly recognizable — both eyes and ears should always be visible.

When using the shield shape or outline:

  • Cropping and scale may be more flexible and expressive.
  • Use primary or secondary brand colors.
  • PA colors may be used sparingly as accents (other accent colors are not permitted).

The full Penn State mark (shield + logotype) provides the strongest recognition and legal protection for the brand and should be used whenever possible.

Please Follow These Important Reminders for Using the Nittany Lion Shield Alone

  • A full University mark must appear on the same surface or field of view.
  • Always maintain the visual clarity and integrity of the design. For example, an artistic effect should not alter the color or prevent the Nittany Lion from being recognizable.
  • Any cropping of the Nittany Lion must be minimal so that both eyes and ears are distinguishable.
  • If using the shield shape as a container to crop photos or images (inside of the shield shape), always extend the shield shape off the edge of the creative canvas so that it feels more like a design element and not as if the Nittany Lion has been replaced.
  • For photos placed inside the shield shape, always choose photos that feature multiple people (images that do not feature people can be acceptable). Do not use close-up portraits, as they create the appearance of a person replacing the Nittany Lion.

Incorrect Use

Please see University Mark misuse examples below.

Incorrect mark usage: adding custom text

DO NOT replace the Penn State logotype. Do not use custom text next to the Nittany Lion shield as this appears to emulate a Tier 1 or 2 mark.

Incorrect mark usage: Nittany Lion shield within a shape

DO NOT place the Nittany Lion shield within another graphic element or shape, as this creates the appearance of a new logo design. The exceptions to this rule are coins and lapel pins, as noted above.

Incorrect mark usage: text within shield shape

DO NOT use the shield design or the shield shape as a container for text. Extreme caution should be used if text is ever overlapping the Nittany Lion Shield.

Logotype

The name of our University is represented by a text treatment called a logotype, and is one of the core components of the University mark. This custom logotype is a clear and strong expression with origins from a slab serif typeface. “Penn” and “State” are designed together as a single expression.

NOTE: Never recreate our logotype or use it on its own without the Nittany Lion shield.

Vertical Marks

We have two primary vertical marks. As is the case for any Tier 1-4 vertical mark, these should be considered secondary to the primary horizontal mark, intended to be used for space-restricted situations where a center axis design is more functional. The vertical mark on certain merchandise, for example, may be more effective.

Size relationship between the Vertical 1 and Vertical 2 primary marks

The Vertical 1 mark (see examples below) maintains the same scale relationship between the Nittany Lion shield and the logotype as the primary horizontal mark.

Examples //

The Vertical 2 mark (see examples below) offers a design that features a much larger visual presence of the Nittany Lion shield compared to the logotype.

Registered Marks

The registered marks (shown below) should always and only be used on merchandise and promotional product. These promotional products are often seen and used outside of a Penn State context and use of the ® (registration mark) provides legal protection for our brand and visual identity. The placement of the ® (registration mark) is always at the baseline level to the right of the “Penn State” logotype for these horizontal and vertical marks.

Printed communications and materials, digital presentations, permanent signs, and other digital designs and communications are not required to, and should not, use marks with the ® (registration mark) symbol.

NOTE: Trademark designations are required for items that bear the University’s mark and are for commercial use. Always work with a licensed vendor to produce merchandise and promotional product. Working with a licensed vendor will ensure the proper trademark designations are added to University marks. Please contact licensing@psu.edu for questions related to Penn State merchandise.

NOTE: Organizations or individuals external to the University may NOT use Penn State names, marks, or symbols for any promotional or commercial purpose without obtaining permission from the Office of Strategic Communications.
